What can an International "1 year MBA" do for you | Best Colleges | Benefits | Cost | Placements
For experienced professionals, the 1 year MBA works out to be an effective choice for career growth.
While in India, we have options like IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX and ISB's PGP, there is merit in evaluating the 1 year MBA from abroad also
- Europe - INSEAD, IESE, IE Business School, HEC Paris, SDA Bocconi, IMD Switzerland
- UK - London Business School, Cambridge, Oxford
- USA - Kellogg, Cornell Johnson ( in the USA, the 2 year MBA is more popular - HBS, Standford etc.)
- Asia-Pacific - Insead Singapore, HKUST, China Europe International Business School ( CEIBS)
The advantage stems from having a truly global MBA with an international cohort, be it faculty or batchmates
e.g. INSEAD has students from 92 nationalities amongst its ~1000 batch size
The faculty is also international and helps you get a global perspective. In India, IIMA does not have any ex-expatriates and ISB has visiting faculty.
While IIMA and ISB would have International Placements that can be counted on the fingers, these programs have students working in as many as 64 countries like an INSEAD. In CEIBS - 30% of the students are international
Admission is through GMAT and there are not so particular about the GMAT score as about the admissions essay and SOP.
Plus unlike India, where 86% and 66% of batch at PGPX IIMA and ISB are engineers, there is more diversity in backgrounds abroad
However one of the major issues is whether you are willing to write a cheque of close of INR 1 cr for the 1 year MBA. Are you mentally prepared for the ramifications of a loan of this magnitude
Fees and Living Expenses is as follows
- INSEAD - 10 months - EUR 85.5k+27k ~ INR 90 lacs
- LBS - 18 months - GBP 82k+43k ~ INR 110 lacs
- IE Madrid - 12 months - EUR 73k+25k ~ INR 78 lacs
- IESE barcelona - 19 months - EUR 88k+38k= ~ INR 100 lacs
- Oxford ~ INR 63 lacs
- CEIBS - 12 months - RMB 428k+living expenses
- HKUST HKD 802,000 ~ INR 70 lacs
These can be financed through Prodigy Finance without collateral
There are excellent placement opportunities. As per the FT Rankings, 2018, graduates from these institutes ear upwards of USD 150k p.a., 3 years post MBA e.g. 177k at INSEAD, 167k at LBS, 163k at CEIBS, 148k at IE and 158k at HKUST
The rankings are also taking into considerations aspects like career services, alumni recommendation, employment after 3 months of convocation etc
In European MBA, there is the issue of work visa for non- Europeans, especially if you dont know a local language like French etc.
Plus the placement there is more individual effort based, unlike a placement fair conducted in India. So you need to make a lot of effort over a LinkedIn, Email, alumni outreach etc
e.g. at INSEAD, 52% students get jobs through college. 23% return to previous companies or are sponsored, 13% thru own contacts, 8% thru summers and 4% Entrepreneurship.
INSEAD students get placed in 64 countries.

- 12% batch gets placed in financial services and 30% in Technology
- 54%. 53% and 62% students were able to change Sector, Country and Function, with 29% being able to change all 3
- Median Salary is $ 136k p.a.
in London Business School, average salaries are $ 105k p.a. Consulting 41%, Financial Services 26% and Tech 20%
