IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX Program- Admissions, Cost, ROI, Career
Impact etc
The PGPX is a 1 year full time residential program offered
by IIM Ahmedabad since 2006.
The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), has
been ranked 31st in the FT (Financial Times) Global MBA Ranking 2018 in its top
100 list of B-Schools, announced in January 2018.
In addition, IIMA is at number two position in the ‘Career
progress rank' and has 100 percent ‘Faculty with doctorates'.
PGPX 2018-19: Profile of Students is as follows:
Number of students: 138
GMAT 700
GRE 323
Total work experience 8
Years 9 months
International work experience 1 Year 11 months
Age as on March 31, 2018 31
Years 10 months
86%+ students in this source are from Engineering
background. The motivation often is to move from IT Service Delivery to
Product/Strategy, from PSU to Private Sector, from a functional specialist role
to a generalist geared for CXO roles etc. Plus in each batch, there are a few
niche profiles, from design, NGO, Education, etc
IIMA now wants younger people to apply and thus the
eligibility criteria is 4 years experience with 25 years of age
In terms of learning, you get world class classroom
experience with ~ 700 hours classroom experience. Professors live on campus and
thus are quite open for discussions outside the classroom, say on your startup
ideas. Like I got a lot of inputs from the professors for cajobportal.com.
Also, you can write cases and do research projects under them, For e.g. I had
done an internship with HUL Treasury under a Finance Professors
Grades are not disclosed in placement process. Thus focus is
on learning and you are saved from a typical B-school rat race on the CGPA
metric
Batch size is lower- if you benchmark with an ISB, its ~15%
of their batch strength. You can thus have more focussed interactions with
batchmahes
Plus, on IIM Ahmedabad campus, you can often interact with
PGP, PGP FABM, AFP and International Immersion students. Thus you get a
experience range of 0-15 years on campus
Placements are quite decent with max 54 lacs p.a. and
mean/median of 28 lacs p.a.

Unlike an ISB, you generally dont have bulk recruiters from
the MBBs of the world. But companies like Mckinsey do recruit PGPX graduates
There would be many companies which recruit from IIMA's 2
year program ( since its of 1961 vintage) and they can recruit them as a
management trainee. But they may not recruit from the 1 year program. This is because recruitment in PGPX is a
one-to-one matchmaking affair as you are recruited as a GM, VP etc.
Thus PGPX placements will take time as well, often extending
from Oct to 3 months after convocation. A few may remain still unplaced as
their profiles would have been quite niche and they would have been very
particular about what roles they want.
Thus its like shooting with a gun rather than a rifle. In
PGP, placements may get concluded in 3 days. Often PGPs, being freshers, are
agnostic between, say a role in management consulting and a TAS. So the
turnaround time is quicker. Here, because of the past experience fitment issue,
things take time
But generally PGPX alums do well. You will always have
outliers, but that should not be factor for judging the efficacy of a course
The famous startups are Craftsvilla , merajob etc. as the
course is quite rich in learning experience
You get the IIM Alumni network, which is a CEO factory of
India, growing in numbers since 1961
Cost is 25 lacs+GST+Cost fo 2 week International Immersion.
But thats fully financed by SBI without collaterals. You also forego an year of
salary.
Effectively it boils down to ~25-30k per month of branding
costs
Wrt International MBAs, PGPX is a better bet if you are
looking at lower costs and placements in India
